Skenfrith Castle

Skenfrith Castle is one of the 'Three Castles of Gwent', founded by Norman lord William fitz Osbern in the early 12th century to protect the route from Wales to Hereford. The castle we see today was rebuilt in the 13th century by Hubert de Burgh as a stone fortress featuring well-preserved walls encircling a distinctive circular keep. Located on the west bank of the River Monnow in Monmouthshire, the castle represents an important example of Norman military architecture adapted to medieval Welsh borders. In Cadw's guardianship, the site remains one of Wales's finest surviving castle complexes.
