Shane's Castle

Shane's Castle is a historic ruin near Antrim on Northern Ireland's Lough Neagh shoreline, built in 1345 by the Clandeboy O'Neill dynasty and originally named Edenduffcarrick meaning "brow of black rock." The castle owes its present name to Shane O'Neill, who ruled Lower Clandeboy during the late sixteenth century. Though largely destroyed by fire in 1816, the castle remains an impressive sight featuring notable structures including a unique Camellia House and striking landscape presence. As the family seat of the O'Neills of Clanaboy, it anchors one of Northern Ireland's finest private demesnes spanning 2,700 acres. The site has gained contemporary prominence as a filming location for the acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones.
