Santiago Tower

Santiago Tower is one of the best-preserved 16th-century defensive structures among the 43 towers that once protected Alicante's agricultural orchards from Berber pirate raids. Located in La Albufereta near the Lucentum TRAM stop, the tower was rebuilt in 1983 from ruins, with only three of its four ashlar corners remaining when restoration began—a 12-year project requiring salvaged materials from reclamation yards. Designated as a Monument of Cultural Interest, it stands as an important example of medieval defensive architecture from a network of which 25 towers remain standing across the municipalities of Alicante, San Juan, Muchamiel, and El Campello, representing centuries of maritime security measures.
