Rothschild Castle in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, originally a medieval fortress from the 13th century, underwent dramatic neo-Gothic reconstruction in 1875 under Baron Albert Salomon Anselm von Rothschild, who commissioned architect Friedrich von Schmidt for the ambitious renovation. Positioned majestically on a rocky outcrop above the confluence of the Ybbs and Schwarzbach rivers, the castle features extravagant interiors including a crystal hall and historic "Schwarze Kuchl" blacksmith's forge. Today, the castle houses the 5-Elemente Museum and serves as an event venue for weddings, celebrations, and cultural programs. Recent renovations by architect Hans Hollein added a striking glass cube structure to the castle tower, creating a dialogue between historical and contemporary architecture.
