Rothley Castle

Rothley Castle is an 18th-century Gothic folly built in 1755 by architect Daniel Garrett for Sir Walter Blackett, owner of nearby Wallington Hall. This ornamental structure features a central tower with two storeys linked by curtain walls to smaller turrets, all adorned with battlements and Gothic detailing. Originally equipped with six brass guns in 1748 during post-Jacobite anxieties, the castle transitioned to purely decorative purposes as peace returned to northern England. A Grade II* listed building, the tower offers 360-degree views from its upper level and remains visible from Wallington Hall across the Northumberland countryside, exemplifying 18th-century landscape ornament and Romantic aesthetics in architectural design.
