Ross Castle

Ross Castle is a 15th-century lakeside fortress situated on Lough Leane's inlet near Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. Likely constructed by Irish chieftain O'Donoghue Mór, the castle holds legendary significance as the final Munster stronghold to resist Cromwell's forces during the English Civil War. According to local lore, defenders believed a prophecy claiming only a ship could breach the castle's walls; when Cromwellian General Ludlow launched a boat on the lake, the prophecy's apparent fulfillment prompted their surrender. Today, visitors can access the castle March through November, exploring interior chambers on guided tours accommodating up to 15 people, along with exhibitions, parkland views, mountain vistas, and walking trails around the scenic lakeside setting.
