Rodoni Castle

Rodoni Castle, also known as Kalaja e Rodonit or Skanderbeg Castle, extends across a rocky peninsula into the Adriatic Sea at the northern Gulf of Durrës. Built by Albanian national hero Skanderbeg between 1450 and 1452, this impressive fortification features 400 meters of walls and defensive towers designed to guard against Ottoman invasion. Though destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1466, the castle was rebuilt by the Venetian Republic in 1500, reflecting centuries of contested control. Today, this freely accessible fortress sits within a nature reserve, requiring a scenic 25-minute walk along a sandy coastal path to reach this remarkable seaside stronghold of Albanian independence.
