Rinville Castle

Rinville Castle, built in the 16th century by Richard McThomas Oge of the powerful Burke family, is a four-storey tower house exemplifying the fortified residences constructed by Anglo-Norman and Gaelic lords across Ireland. Originally built to defend Burke family interests in Connacht, the castle survived an attack in 1574 by Sir Edward Fitton, who burned surrounding lands but failed to capture the stronghold. After falling into ruin, Rinville Castle was purchased and largely restored by Galway County Council in 1979. Now situated within the picturesque 84-hectare Rinville Park overlooking Galway Bay, the castle's exterior is accessible to visitors exploring woodland trails, picnic areas, and waterfront amenities, though the interior remains closed to the public.
