Popton Fort

Popton Fort is a Grade II* listed Palmerston fortification completed in 1864 at a cost of £76,000, serving as part of the inner defence line of Milford Haven alongside Fort Hubberstone. This hexagonal-ramparted fort with pentagonal bastions features two distinct batteries: Moncrieff Battery and Open Battery, originally equipped with eleven 9-inch rifled muzzle-loaded guns in casemates and ten guns in open emplacements. The barracks could accommodate over 150 personnel with support facilities including a canteen, wash rooms, and hospital. Abandoned after the early 20th century, it was used again during World War II before being purchased by BP in 1957. Now part of Valero's Angle Bay Refinery as private property, the fort remains an impressive example of Victorian coastal military engineering.
