Pitten Castle

Pitten Castle, also known as Burg Pitten, is a historic hilltop fortress in the market town of Pitten in Lower Austria's Neunkirchen district. First documented in 1094, the castle likely originated in the 11th century atop an ancient rampart site protected by ditches and palisades overlooking the parish church below. The complex combines medieval stone walls with 19th-century residential sections and features a remarkable 140-metre deep well descending into bedrock, engineered in the early 17th century. Destroyed in 1482 by Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus after a four-year siege, the castle was later converted into a private hunting lodge and remains privately owned today.
