Orchardton Tower

Orchardton Tower is Scotland's unique circular tower house and the only free-standing round tower of its kind in the country, built by John Cairns in the mid-15th century in the Stewartry region of Dumfriesshire. This exceptional architectural anomaly stands four storeys high constructed of rubble, topped with a small gabled cape-house serving as a watch chamber and a parapet walk offering panoramic views. The tower likely represents an anachronistic choice by Cairns, who built this distinctive fortified residence some 200 years after such circular tower designs had fallen out of favor in Scottish architecture. Passing by marriage to the Maxwell family in the mid-16th century, the tower's design reflects individual taste over prevailing architectural conventions. Set in idyllic rural surroundings approximately six miles south of Castle Douglas, Orchardton Tower remains a striking architectural oddity and fascinating example of personalized defensive design during Scotland's late medieval period.
