Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle, situated in the Lake District near Ravenglass in Cumbria, has dominated its landscape since at least the 13th century when the Penningtons established their family seat on the site. The castle likely occupies foundations dating to the Roman era, when a castellum served the nearby fort of Glannoventa. Following Scottish raids in the 14th century, the Penningtons fortified the hall with a sturdy four-storey pele tower built from Roman stone, creating a defensive stronghold. In 1862, architect Anthony Salvin extensively redesigned the castle's interior for the fourth Lord Muncaster. Today, the privately owned Grade I listed castle showcases 77 acres of historic gardens featuring rhododendrons, camellias, and magnolias, along with the Hawk & Owl Centre and The Weapons Hall museum. Muncaster's reputation as one of Britain's most haunted castles adds to its enduring mystique and visitor appeal.
