Moross Castle is a McSwyne tower house built in 1532 by Turlogh Mac Suibhne on a rocky island in Fanad, County Donegal, connected to shore by a 45-metre causeway. The surviving south-west corner stands two storeys high as testament to medieval Scottish-Irish clan influence, as the McSweeneys were among Ireland's oldest clans, arriving from Scotland after the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn. Granted to Henry Vaughan in 1610 and later modified with a thatched roof, the castle today offers coastal views; visitors should check tide times, as the causeway can be submerged during high water.
