Möderndorf Castle

Möderndorf Castle in Maria Saal rises gracefully beside the local church as a Renaissance jewel in Carinthia's Zollfeld plain, first documented in 1164 but achieving its distinctive form through 16th-century expansion. Its two overlapping rectangular blocks feature late-Gothic architectural details, including a rare red-sandstone rounded arch portal, while decorative stones from 1662 bear the coats of arms of the Jobornegg and Keutschach families who shaped its evolution. The castle evolved from a modest 14th-century fortified settlement into an elegant residence that reflects centuries of aristocratic patronage. Today, Möderndorf preserves its Renaissance character and surrounds visitors with the historic charm of the Glan river valley's cultural landscape.
