La Torre de Canadell

La Torre de Canadell is a 19th-century watchtower located on the puig de Canadell in Sant Joan les Fonts, Garrotxa, Catalonia, built during the Third Carlist War (1872-1876) under orders of Carlist general Savalls. The tower features a distinctive square base with loopholes, constructed from bricks and unworked stones joined by mortar, measuring approximately one meter thick walls, and surrounded by an outer wall and moat. Two floors with embrasures for mountain artillery and loopholes on all sides served both surveillance and defensive purposes, functioning as an optical telegraph station connecting the Castell de Figueres to Olot along the military communication line. Classified as a Good of Cultural Interest, the tower was acquired by the municipality in 2018 with plans for preservation and rehabilitation, representing a significant example of 19th-century military fortification architecture in Catalan highlands.
