Kisimul Castle

Kisimul Castle is a medieval fortress occupying a dramatic rocky islet in Castlebay on the Isle of Barra in Scotland's Western Isles, serving as the historical seat of the chief of Clan Macneil. The castle's picturesque island setting earned it the evocative name 'the castle in the sea,' and it remains the only significant medieval castle to survive in the entire Western Isles region. Visitors reach this atmospheric fortress by boat, retracing the historic route once taken by clan leaders. Today managed by Historic Environment Scotland, Kisimul Castle combines stunning coastal landscape, authentic Scottish clan heritage, and genuine medieval architecture in a uniquely isolated setting.
