Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle, dramatically situated on the shores of Loch Awe in Argyll, stands as one of Scotland's most photographed castles. Built in the mid-1400s as a stronghold for the Campbells of Glenorchy, the fortress features a striking five-storey tower house, lower hall, courtyard, and barracks structures. It notably contains the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland. Following the 1689 Jacobite Rising, the castle was transformed into a garrison stronghold before being abandoned by century's end. Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, the ruins offer visitors dramatic views across Loch Awe and can be explored via membership pass or a 14-day Explorer Pass, with audio guides and learning resources available.
