Schoonselhof Park Cemetery represents one of Flanders' most distinguished park-cemetery complexes, built around an 18th-century castle. The original estate contained a 16th-century 'house of pleasure' before Marie Louise du Bois commissioned Schoonselhof Castle in 1779. Purchased by Antwerp in 1911 and opened as a public cemetery in 1921, the 85-hectare domain features tree-lined lanes, lawns, ponds and waterways resembling a public park more than a burial ground, with dedicated sections for military and religious communities.
