Kasteel Gruuthuse

Kasteel Gruuthuse in Oostkamp boasts an exceptionally long documented history spanning nearly nine centuries. The estate's name honors Lodewijk van Gruuthuse (1422–1492), the prominent Bruges merchant and art patron who acquired the lordship and castle in 1454. The d'Ursel family has owned the domain continuously since 1616, maintaining it through centuries of social change. The existing castle's striking Flemish neo-Renaissance architecture was commissioned by Count Charles d'Ursel in 1888, designed by architect René Buyck, while preserving the historic gateway building. The 30-hectare private park exemplifies late 19th-century design, combining geometric and landscape gardening traditions with notable features including sunken lawns, mirror pond, winter garden, rose pergola, tree-lined avenues, and meadow woodlands.
