Kanturk Castle

Kanturk Castle is an impressive limestone Tudor mansion built around 1601 for Dermot MacDonagh MacCarty, Lord of Duhallow, in the Blackwater Valley of County Cork. Standing four storeys high with four five-storey towers reaching 95 feet, the castle's construction was famously halted by English authorities who feared it would become a base for attacks on English settlers. The architectural ambition of its design, measuring 92 feet in length and 36 feet in width, reflects the aspirations of Irish chieftains despite incomplete construction. Now owned by An Taisce (the National Trust for Ireland), it is designated a National Monument and represents a unique chapter in Irish defensive architecture.
