Jardines del Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos preserves the historic palace-fortress where Catholic Monarchs resided following Córdoba's reconquest, built atop foundations used successively by Roman governors, Visigoth rulers, and Umayyad emirs. The complex features magnificent Andalusian gardens spanning multiple levels—High Garden, Middle Garden, Low Garden, Paseo de los Reyes, and a Moorish Courtyard—filled with colourful flowering plants, fountains, and decorative mosaics. Designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1994 and protected by heritage laws since 1986, this fortress-garden exemplifies the convergence of military architecture and Islamic horticultural traditions within medieval Spanish history.
