Ishëm Castle stands as one of Albania's most significant Ottoman-era fortifications, positioned 26 kilometers north of Durrës on a dominant hill above the Ishëm River valley. Built between 1572 and 1574 by the Ottoman Empire to control trade routes and military movements, the fortress once housed a garrison of approximately 410 soldiers and offered commanding views extending to the Adriatic. Designated a First Category Cultural Monument, the castle suffered damage during the 2019 earthquake but has since been restored and illuminated for visitors, while the tomb of renowned painter Ibrahim Kodra occupies a place of honor in its courtyard.
