Howth Castle

Howth Castle is a historic estate residence of Norman origin commanding 472 acres of parkland above Dublin Bay in County Dublin, representing one of Ireland's most enduring aristocratic seats. Originally built by Almeric, first Lord of Howth, who arrived in Ireland in 1177 with John de Courcy, the castle remained the ancestral home of the St Lawrence family for eight centuries, with successive generations adapting the structure to contemporary tastes. The house achieved its present appearance following major renovation in 1738 and a comprehensive redesign by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1911, creating a sophisticated blend of medieval heritage and early modern elegance. The expansive estate encompasses much of Howth Head with extensive heathland and access to famous cliff walks offering panoramic views over Dublin Bay and the island of Ireland's Eye, making it both an architectural landmark and a natural landscape destination.
