Hoo Fort

Hoo Fort is a 19th-century military installation situated on Hoo Island in the River Medway, forming a crucial part of Chatham Naval Dockyard's defensive perimeter. Built on recommendations from the 1859 Royal Commission, the fort originally faced subsidence challenges during its construction, which wasn't completed until 1871. The finished structure featured a single tier of eleven 9-inch rifled muzzle-loading guns designed to protect the inner navigable channel at Pinup Reach. Accessible from along the scenic Saxon Shore Way via Vicarage Lane in the Hoo Peninsula, this historic fort provides insight into Victorian military engineering and Kent's naval defence heritage.
