Hof van Rameyen

Hof van Rameyen in Berlaar is a 72-hectare castle estate with origins dating to the 13th century, when a moated keep was first erected on this strategic location. The castle achieved its distinctive irregular rectangular layout and separate moated bailey by the 16th century, when it was further fortified with gun ports. Notably owned by Nicolaas Rubens, son of Flemish master painter Peter Paul Rubens, who restored the property in 1643, the castle stands as a protected monument since 1992. Though privately owned today, the estate represents an important example of medieval military architecture evolved through centuries of ownership by prominent regional families.
