Hellifield Peel Castle

Hellifield Peel Castle stands in spectacular parkland between the market towns of Skipton and Settle on the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales. This medieval fortification originated as a 14th-century peel tower and was converted into a tower house by the 15th century when Laurence Hamerton was granted licence to crenellate it. After years of ruin, the property was restored beginning in 1914 by Sir William Nicholson and architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. In 2004, the castle underwent an ambitious transformation into a family residence, featured prominently on Grand Designs television. Today it operates as a successful bed-and-breakfast where visitors can experience both the medieval tower and later architectural additions within an exceptional Dales setting.
