Hauteroche Castle occupies a dramatic rocky promontory 50 meters high overlooking the Viroin River valley in the village of Dourbes, Viroinval, commanding views across the Walloon countryside. This ruined 14th-century fortress originally featured a formidable square keep with walls measuring 2.5 meters thick and standing at least 13 meters high. Destroyed during a 1554 siege, it remains as evocative remains accessible via hiking trails from parking below, offering rewards of panoramic vistas for those prepared for a challenging climb. Scientifically excavated between 1976 and 2002, the site reveals its medieval military architecture while remaining private property, adding to its austere mystique.
