Hardknott Roman Fort, known as Mediobogdum, stands on a dramatic rocky spur in the Lake District at over 800 feet altitude, making it one of the highest forts in Roman Britain. Built between 120 and 138 to guard the important pass and route connecting the Cumbrian coast with the heart of the region, the fort was initially garrisoned by Dalmatian troops. The well-preserved remains include the headquarters, commandant's house, and bath house spread across three acres. Maintained by English Heritage on National Trust land, the fort offers commanding views over the River Esk valleys and remains one of Cumbria's finest Roman archaeological sites.
