Glenart Castle

Glenart Castle near Arklow, County Wicklow is a castellated country house that originated as a hunting lodge around 1750 and was enlarged in the early 1800s by John Proby, 1st Earl of Carysfort. The structure was rebuilt c.1820 in a toy castle style with part two-, three-, and four-storey sections, and underwent further expansion in 1869. The castle features a fairly austere composition dominated by a square, battlemented tower with large rectangular windows and a battlemented parapet. Partly destroyed by fire around 1920, the castle subsequently changed hands several times and served as a hotel in the early 2000s. Its diverse architectural periods and hilltop setting near Arklow make it a notable example of 19th-century country house design.
