Garderhøj Fort stands as Copenhagen's largest fortification in the land defense system, built between 1886 and 1892 with private funding. The only fort in the system featuring its own infantry barracks, it was equipped with powerful twin Swedish 15-centimeter cannons mounted in heavily armored towers. After serving the Defense Ministry until 1920, it transitioned to ammunition storage and police training before being handed to the Danish people in 1996. Restored between 1996 and 2013 with government and cultural support, it now operates as a museum and experience center offering interactive exhibitions, functional cannon demonstrations, educational programs, and guided forest walks for visitors of all ages.
