Fuerte de Navidad

Fuerte de Navidad is an 18th-century neoclassical coastal fortification located on a hilltop adjacent to Cartagena's harbour in Murcia province. Built on the remains of a 12th-century battery as part of a comprehensive defensive programme during the reign of Carlos II, the fort features stone-built casemates designed to accommodate sixteen artillery pieces across two levels, alongside powder magazines and garrison quarters. Designed by military engineer Esteban de Panón, the fortress was restored between 2004 and 2007 and now operates as a cultural heritage site. Visitors can explore the reconstructed 19th-century military quarters, viewing authentic artifacts and gaining insight into the everyday life of soldiers who defended Spain's strategic Mediterranean port.
