Forte Junqueira sits on the banks of the Paraguay River in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, with a distinctive hexagonal design and 3-meter-thick limestone walls. Built shortly after the Paraguayan War in 1871, this military fortification was named after War Minister José de Oliveira Junqueira. The fort houses twelve 75mm cannons manufactured by Krupp around 1872, which were never fired in combat. Now operated by the 17th Frontier Battalion, the fortress welcomes visitors who come to experience commanding views of the Paraguay River and the distant Pantanal landscape, while learning about Brazil's military heritage.
