Fortaleza Duarte

Fortaleza Duarte is a historic military fortress located in San Francisco de Macorís, capital of Duarte Province in the Dominican Republic's northeast Cibao region. The fortress holds significance from the nation's turbulent 20th century, particularly during the Battle of San Francisco de Macoris on November 29, 1916, when Dominican forces refused to surrender arms and took control of the local fortress. San Francisco de Macorís itself, named after Saint Francis and the territory's historic name Macorix, prospered as a key colonial settlement. The fortress stands as a reminder of Dominican resilience and resistance during the early years of the United States occupation, maintaining its strategic military importance in this sixth-most populated city in the nation.
