Fortaleza de Santa Engracia stands as a late 18th-century military stronghold perched on the Castillete peak within the Pancorbo gorge, Burgos. Built between 1794 and 1797 during the Convention War, it was equipped with 173 artillery pieces, 600 horses, and a garrison of 10,000 men to defend against French revolutionary forces. The fortress played a crucial role during the War of Independence, occupied by Napoleon's troops from 1808 to 1813, until its recovery by General O'Donnell. Though destroyed in 1823 and designated a Cultural Interest Asset in 1949, accessible remains and information panels allow visitors to explore this strategic defensive position commanding the important Pancorbo passage.
