Fortaleza de Boca de Yuma, situated in the La Altagracia province near the mouth of the Yuma River on the eastern Dominican coast, represents a well-preserved Spanish colonial coastal defense structure. Originally built to overlook Yuma Bay with highly defensible positioning, the fortress featured cannons mounted on cliffs above the sea that served as its primary armament against pirate threats including famous corsairs like Sir Francis Drake and the legendary Roberto Cofresí. The fort witnessed pivotal moments in Dominican military history, including the 1655 naval victory, the Battle of Sabana Real in 1691, and the Battle of Palo Hincado in 1808.
