Fort Saint Philip is a historic stone fortification in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, situated on the Mississippi River about 40 miles upriver from its mouth. Originally constructed by the Spanish in 1746, it was rebuilt by Spanish forces in 1791-92 and strengthened by Andrew Jackson before the War of 1812. The fort successfully defended New Orleans against British naval assault in 1812 and later resisted Union siege during the Civil War. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, it represents an important chapter in American military and regional history.
