Fort Purbrook stands on Portsdown Hill as one of five Palmerston forts constructed between 1860 and 1870 to defend Portsmouth Harbour from northern land assault. Completed in 1870 and Grade II* listed, this fortress was strategically positioned to the east of Fort Widley along the ridge overlooking the naval base. The fort now operates as Peter Ashley Activity Centres, offering visitors recreational facilities including wall climbing, horseback riding, archery, and shooting, successfully transforming this historic military structure into a modern leisure destination.
