Fort of El Desnarigado stands on Ceuta's northeastern coast, overlooking the cove where the legendary Berber pirate El Desnarigado once based his operations. Built in the 19th century under the design of Captain José de Ramón Carbonell, this fortress replaced earlier Portuguese fortifications dating to 1415 and subsequent 17th-century additions. Strategically positioned to guard Ceuta's harbor entrance, the fort is a key component of the city's historic defense system. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, it houses a museum showcasing Ceuta's rich military heritage. The fortification remains a functioning military facility and can be visited only by authorized groups.
