Fort MacArthur

Fort MacArthur, formally established on October 31, 1914, in San Pedro, Los Angeles, is named in honor of Lieutenant General Arthur MacArthur and served as a critical coastal defense installation for over five decades. Developed as an Army training center during World War I, the fort received its first large gun batteries in 1917 and remained active in harbor defense operations until 1974. Today, the Upper Reservation operates as San Pedro's Angels Gate Park, home to the Fort MacArthur Military Museum housed in the restored Battery Osgood-Farley, which preserves and interprets the fort's military history. A portion remains in use by the United States Air Force as a housing and administrative annex of Los Angeles Air Force Base.
