Fort Livingston

Fort Livingston is a 19th-century coastal defense fortress constructed in 1841 on Grand Terre Island in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, guarding Barataria Pass. Named after Edward Livingston, a prominent statesman who served as Secretary of State, the fort was designed as a major coastal defense installation but never saw combat. Though abandoned after the Civil War, its substantial ruins remain one of Louisiana's most significant examples of early American coastal architecture. Today accessible only by boat, the fort stands as a testament to the region's strategic military importance during the pre-Civil War era.
