Fort Bayard, located in Santa Clara, New Mexico, was established in 1866 by the U.S. Army to protect miners and settlers along the Apache Trail during the expansion of the American frontier. Named for Brigadier General George Dashiell Bayard, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, the fort became historically significant as a training base for African-American Buffalo Soldiers defending against Native American attacks. Following its military closure, Fort Bayard was repurposed as the Army's pioneering tuberculosis sanitarium and subsequently operated as a Veterans Administration hospital, representing an evolution from frontier defense to public health service.
