Forchtenstein Castle rises dramatically from a rocky cone in the Rosalia Mountains near Forchtenstein in Burgenland. Built in the early 15th century by the Lords of Mattersdorf, the fortress gained prominence in 1622 when Nikolaus Esterházy, founder of the Esterházy dynasty's western Hungarian line, received it from Emperor Ferdinand II. Substantial renovations from 1630 to 1634 by Vienna builder Simon Retacco and later work by Domenico Carlone transformed it into an elegant residence. The castle houses one of Central Europe's largest private weapon collections and showcases the Esterházy family's collecting passion from the golden age of aristocratic patronage. Today it attracts over 100,000 visitors annually who explore its exhibitions and attend cultural events throughout the year.
