Dunmanus Castle

Dunmanus Castle is a 15th-century tower house built in 1430 by Donogh More O'Mahony on a rocky outcrop overlooking Dunmanus Bay in West Cork. This Gothic structure represents the largest of a dozen fortifications built by the O'Mahony Clan and is considered a prototype for tower house design in the region. The castle features a distinctive arrangement with ground-level and raised entrances, reflecting typical Irish defensive architecture. Captured by Crown forces in 1602 before being recaptured by the O'Mahoays, it remains an important monument to medieval Irish heritage and clan history on the scenic Mizen peninsula.
