Dunguaire Castle

Dunguaire Castle crowns the southeastern shore of Galway Bay as a beautifully restored 16th-century tower house near Kinvara in County Galway, positioned on a narrow causeway that leaves it almost completely surrounded by water except for its single connection to the mainland. Built by the Hynes clan in 1520, the castle's site carries legendary significance as the former location of the royal palace of Guaire Aidhne, a legendary king of Connacht, with historical records suggesting the Hynes family may have occupied the area since 662. The magnificently restored 75-foot tower, defensive wall, curtain wall, towerlet and banquet hall represent meticulous heritage preservation work that has made Dunguaire one of the most visited and photographed castles in western Ireland. The castle's dramatic waterside setting, combined with its well-maintained medieval architecture and historical layering spanning both mythic and documented Irish history, creates an iconic representation of Galway's rich cultural heritage.
