Dùn Ara Castle

Dùn Ara Castle is a medieval ruin situated on a rocky outcrop at Sorne Point on the Isle of Mull's northern coast, overlooking the waters towards Coll and Ardnamurchan. Dating from at least the 14th century, it served as a significant stronghold of the MacKinnon Clan from 1354, though its foundations rest upon an even older dùn dating to the Iron Age or Early Medieval period. The castle comprises the remains of a substantial curtain wall of stone and lime that once enclosed the rock summit, with the most impressive sections preserved on the north-east side. An artificially-constructed harbour with jetty and boat landing on the south-west side testifies to its maritime importance. The site is accessible via a scenic two-mile walk from the Glengorm estate coffee shop.
