Doonagore Castle

Doonagore Castle is a distinctive round 16th-century tower house perched on a hill approximately 1 km above the coastal village of Doolin in County Clare. The castle and nearby radio mast serve as navigational landmarks for boats approaching Doolin Pier. Its name derives from the Irish 'Dún na Gabhair,' meaning the fort of the rounded hills or goats. Built during the mid-16th century on the site of an earlier ringfort, the castle features a small walled enclosure and displays a picturesque castle-like structure. The castle gained historical significance when 170 survivors of a Spanish Armada ship wrecked below the castle in 1588 were captured and hanged at the site.
