Cromwell's Castle

Cromwell's Castle is a distinctive round tower standing on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, constructed between 1651 and 1652 by Sir Robert Blake following the Parliamentary invasion during the English Civil War. The tower, named after Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England, features a basement, two upper storeys, and a gun platform built by Master Gunner Abraham Tovey around 1739 during the War of Jenkins' Ear. Rising over 50 feet high with nearly 13-foot-thick rubble walls, this rare surviving stone fortification from the Interregnum period is now managed by English Heritage and welcomes visitors free of charge, including those with dogs on leads.
