Creich Castle

Creich Castle is an impressive L-shaped tower house of the 16th century situated adjacent to a working farm near Creich in Fife, built by the MacDuff Earls of Fife. The castle gained notable historical significance as the birthplace of Mary Beaton, one of the celebrated 'Four Marys' chosen to serve Mary Queen of Scots. The property passed through several notable families including the Liddels and the Beatons, whose association produced Cardinal David Beaton, Archbishop of St Andrews in the 16th century. The castle features a square stair tower in the angle of its L-shaped design with walls that rise impressively above ground level, and is protected as a scheduled monument today.
