Conna Castle

Conna Castle is a remarkably well-preserved 16th-century tower house dramatically positioned on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Bride in County Cork. Built by Sir Thomas Ruadh Fitzgerald, eldest son of the 14th Earl of Desmond, the castle measures 13.6 metres east to west and survives to its full original height. It features defensive elements including narrow slit windows for archers and hidden chambers, and withstood significant 17th-century conflicts before tragically burning in 1653. Designated National Monument number 240, the castle stands as one of Cork's most complete late medieval tower house examples in a small public park.
