Commanderij van Gruitrode

Commanderij van Gruitrode is a historic water fortress in Meeuwen-Gruitrode, Belgian Limburg, with significant medieval origins. Until 1801, it served as one of twelve commanderies within the German Order's Biesen bailiage, functioning as both a waystation and important regional trade center. The medieval castle featured a moat-surrounded main structure fed by the Itterbeek river, paired with a square-shaped tenant farm. Since 2015, the municipality has owned and actively renovated the complete site, transforming it into a cultural gateway to the Duinengordel landscape and preserving its role as a regional heritage landmark.
